Maya Deren was a visionary artist, writer, and filmmaker who developed an original system for the creative use of the cinema. Her work has been described as "a true original" by Orson Welles. She was a founding member of the Independent Artists organization in 1936 and a member of the American Film Institute. Deren directed three films: Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), The Lower Depths (1947), and A Tempest, a Short Film (1954)
She also wrote and directed The Street (1945) and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing Original Screenplay for this film.
